Aim for 40–60% relative humidity indoors. A moisture absorber pulls a few hundred millilitres a month out of a wardrobe; a 12L compressor dehumidifier can pull several litres a day out of a room for about 4–5p an hour. Frequently asked questions
Do moisture absorbers work?
Yes, for small enclosed spaces like wardrobes, cupboards and cars. They are far too slow to fix a damp bedroom or a room where you dry washing.
What humidity should my house be?
Around 40–60% relative humidity. Consistently above 65% is when condensation and mould take hold.
Does mould spray stop mould coming back?
No. It removes visible mould. To stop it returning, lower the humidity with ventilation, a dehumidifier and not drying clothes on radiators.
When should I get professional help with damp?
If damp comes from leaks, rising damp or penetrating damp (wet patches after rain), or if you rent and the landlord hasn't fixed it. Landlords must deal with damp and mould hazards.
